Text editors
» I first started using computers seriously in 1986. Ever since then I've used text editors fairly intensively, at first for writing programs for an econometrics package, then for writing Fortran programs and more recently for writing HTML. I find something quite satisfying about these basic programs - though my current favourite Windows editor TextPad is pretty sophisticated - including for example good HTML integration. » Allin Cottrell has a nice piece on the evils of word processors. Although I'm attracted by markup typesetting languages like TeX and LaTeX the network costs of using them are high given that my employer is a paid up Microsoft groupie. » I draw the line at line editors though. I've still got the scars from struggling with edlin in MS DOS 3.3 for small batch files. Fortunately the Prime and MS DOS machines I used also had half way capable window editors. |
